Underwater Maternity Photography in Manly

Underwater Maternity - Sydney

I’ve been shooting underwater for over 15 years, and maternity has become one of the most meaningful parts of what I do.

There’s something very special about it.

Pregnancy is one of the only times in your life where your body changes this quickly — and then just as quickly, it’s gone. very soon, everything will be different. Life moves on. And unless you capture it, this version of you disappears.

A different way to capture this moment

Most maternity photography follows a familiar path. Beautiful, yes — but often similar.

Underwater changes that.

I still guide you through poses, but they’re designed to work with the water, not against it. Movement becomes more natural, less rigid. The water softens everything — light, lines, expression — so instead of holding a pose, you’re flowing through it.

The result feels more real. More like you.

A lot of the women I work with already have a connection to the ocean or natural environment. Sometimes we shoot at a beach that already means something to them — somewhere they swim, walk, or spend time. That makes the images feel even more personal.

You don’t need to be highly confident in the ocean

People often assume underwater maternity photography is only for strong swimmers.

It’s not.

I work with women of all levels. Some are completely at home in the ocean, while others are a little unsure at first. Before the shoot, we do a fair bit of planning and preparation. I guide you through the process, explain what to expect, and work to your capabilities.

Most sessions are done close to shore in calm, sheltered conditions, often around Shelly Beach in Manly. If ocean conditions aren’t right, or you’d simply prefer a more controlled environment, I can also shoot in heated pools across Sydney during the cooler months.

More than a standard maternity shoot

This style of maternity photography creates something different.

The images feel softer, more fluid, and often more emotional than a standard above-water session. There’s a sense of calm and weightlessness that suits this stage of life beautifully.

For me, moving away from the cold corporate world and into this kind of work has made it more meaningful too. Instead of creating work that disappears into emails and meetings, I get to create something lasting — memories from a brief and important chapter in someone’s life.

Something you’ll keep

These images aren’t just for posting once and moving on from.

They’re the kind you come back to. The kind you print, frame, and keep long after this stage has passed.

Because the truth is, this moment doesn’t last.

And once it’s gone, you don’t get it back.
