Imagine this: a volcano, a golden monastery clinging to its summit, 777 steps to the top, and way too many monkeys eating lice off each other’s butts. Welcome to Mt. Popa, Myanmar’s ultimate climb-with-a-view adventure.
My journey began in Sydney, flying Thai Airways with a quick layover in Bangkok before landing in Mandalay. But getting to Mt. Popa isn’t a straight shot—it’s an adventure in itself.
Rather than hopping on a quick flight to Bagan, I opted for the scenic route: an 8-hour boat trip down the Ayeyarwady River, starting at 5 AM. As we drifted past stilted villages, golden pagodas, and local fishermen casting nets into the morning mist, it felt like time travel—peaceful, immersive, and visually stunning.
From the river port in Bagan, it’s a 1.5-hour drive through hot, dusty countryside, small towns, and open plains before you reach the base of Mt. Popa. Then comes the real challenge: 777 steps to the top, with curious monkeys eyeing your snacks and testing your reflexes.
Mt. Popa is an extinct volcano turned spiritual sanctuary, home to Taung Kalat Monastery—one of Myanmar’s most revered pilgrimage sites. As you ascend, you’ll pass pilgrims honoring the nats, Myanmar’s ancient guardian spirits. The climb is steep, sweaty, and slightly chaotic thanks to the monkey mob, but it’s all part of the charm.
Reaching the top is a moment of pure reward: panoramic views of endless plains, distant temples, and even the Ayeyarwady River stretching toward the horizon. I even made a few monk friends up there—local interactions like these are what make travel truly unforgettable.
If you’re making the journey to Mt. Popa, don’t miss Bagan’s temples at sunrise or sunset. Watching hot air balloons float above a sea of ancient pagodas is nothing short of magical—a perfect end (or start) to your Myanmar adventure.
Mt. Popa isn’t your average tourist stop—it’s a full-on mission, from comfortable flights to unforgettable river cruises, topped off with a sweaty climb to spiritual heights. But trust me, it’s totally worth it. Come for the views, stay for the monkeys, and leave with stories you’ll tell for years.
